WHICH IS THE FIRST FILM IN HISTORY? DO YOU KNOW IT?

If you consider yourself a real fan of the movie industry, you must know the way that this excellent industry was created. The seventh art begins with the success of The Lumiere Brothers; it is necessary to highlight their films are considered by UNESCO as a part of the Memory of the world.

It was around at the time of 1895 in France, when two brothers have an amazing idea, the Lumiere brothers made the first film of our story, it was named like La Sortie de l’usine Lumière à Lyon” or “La Sortie des usines Lumière”, this was a short film, that shows the departure of approximately one hundred workers, who were going from the factory of photographic apparatuses (Property of Lumière Brothers) towards the street Saint-Victor; everyone went in a distracted way, by bicycle, walking, on wagons on horseback … until after 44 seconds approximately, the doorman closes the doors of this factory, and so ends this short film. It was a silent movie, directed and produced by Louis Lumière.

Thanks to the ingenuity of these brothers today`s we can count on the film industry. The cinematograph was patented on February 13th of 1895 by them.

After several presentations in scientific societies, at the University of the Sorbonne, in Brussels and elsewhere, the Lumières decided to make a commercial exhibition of the films they had shot. Finally, they celebrated it in the Salon indien du Grand Café, a basement at number 14 of the Boulevard des Capucines, on December 28th, 1895. In addition to La Sortie de l’usine Lumière à Lyon, other films were screened, such as L’Arrivée d’un train a La Ciotat and L’arroseur arrosé, in which the gardener Jean-François Clerc appears. Thus, with this catalog, cinema began its history as a documentary, as an objective witness of everyday life.

Although the brothers said: “Le cinéma est une invention sans avenir—Cinema is an invention without a future” they took advantage of everything the new invention offered to them to get a profitable business, they sent the cinematograph with an operator to manage it, to the events where it was necessary, for example to the coronation of Tsar Nicholas.

The most interesting thing is that these ingenious brothers, despite their interest in science, abandoned film production, perhaps because they greatly underestimated their invention, or because of their already prominent economic position.

The Lumières not only invented the very first night at the movies, and they not only kept the invention of the cinematograph, but they were also the ones who made the creation of advertising posters for their films. In the Paris of the Belle Epoque, posters were the best form of advertisement.

The truth is that many things that we enjoy today would not exist without the ingenuity and imagination of our predecessors. Many thanks to the brothers’ Auguste Marie Louis Nicolas and Louis Jean Lumière!
